What Is Zero Budget Natural Farming?
Zero Budget Natural Farming was developed by Subhash Palekar, a farmer and agricultural scientist from Maharashtra, over decades of research and experimentation. The term "zero budget" refers to the goal of bringing external input costs to zero by using what is available on the farm — primarily cow dung, cow urine, water, and local plants. "Natural farming" refers to working with natural soil microbiology rather than against it.
ZBNF rests on four wheels (Chaar Chakra in Hindi):
- Jeevamrit — a microbial culture made from cow dung and urine that activates and multiplies soil biology
- Beejamrit — a seed treatment made from cow dung and urine that protects seeds from soil-borne pathogens and strengthens germination
- Mulching (Aavarana) — covering the soil with organic material to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and feed soil organisms
- Waaphasa — managing soil to maintain the right ratio of air and water in the soil pores (not too wet, not too dry)
The fundamental insight of ZBNF is that healthy soil is alive — it contains billions of bacteria, fungi, worms, and other organisms that produce plant nutrients naturally. Chemical fertilizers kill this biology. ZBNF rebuilds and feeds it, making soil self-sustaining over time.
Technique 1: Jeevamrit — The Microbial Engine
Jeevamrit is the central input of ZBNF. It is a microbial culture — a liquid full of beneficial bacteria and fungi — made at essentially zero cost from ingredients available on any farm with a desi cow.
What you need
- 10 litres of cow urine (from desi/indigenous cow — important, not jersey/hybrid)
- 10 kg of fresh cow dung (from desi cow)
- 2 kg of jaggery (gur) or any natural sugar source (fruits, molasses)
- 2 kg of flour from any cereal (wheat, rice, chickpea — serves as food for microbes)
- 1 handful of undisturbed field soil (from under a tree or old farmland — contains native microbes)
- 200 litres of water (non-chlorinated — borewell or river water; not municipal tap water)
How to make it
- Add all ingredients to a 200-litre clay or food-grade plastic drum (not metal)
- Stir thoroughly in a clockwise direction for 5-10 minutes
- Cover loosely with jute or cloth (it needs air, not a sealed lid)
- Keep in the shade — do not expose to direct sun
- Stir once a day for 48 hours in summer (72 hours in winter)
- After 48-72 hours, the mixture is ready — it will smell earthy and slightly fermented (not rotten)
- Filter through cloth before use
How to use it
- Per acre per application: 200 litres (one drum) of Jeevamrit
- Frequency: Every 15 days (once every two weeks) during the crop season
- Application method: Mix with irrigation water (use flood irrigation, or drip if available). Can also be applied as a spray directly on the soil.
- Alternatively: Mix 10 litres of Jeevamrit in 100 litres of water and use as a foliar spray (spraying on leaves) — especially helpful for tall crops
The science behind it: Jaggery feeds the bacteria, flour provides carbon, cow dung and urine supply billions of dormant microorganisms, and the field soil adds native microbial diversity. Within 48 hours, the microbial population multiplies explosively. When applied to soil, these organisms produce nitrogen, phosphorus, and other nutrients in plant-available forms.
Solid Jeevamrit (Ghan Jeevamrit)
For farmers who want to store and apply dry: mix cow dung with soil and dry in the shade. This Ghan (solid) Jeevamrit can be stored for up to 3 months and applied directly to the soil before sowing or between rows of plants.
Technique 2: Beejamrit — Seed Treatment
Beejamrit treats seeds before sowing to protect them from soil-borne fungal diseases, improve germination, and give seedlings a strong start — replacing chemical seed treatments like Thiram or Captan.
What you need
- 5 litres of cow urine (desi cow)
- 250 g of fresh cow dung (desi cow)
- 50 g of lime (chuna)
- A handful of field soil
- 20 litres of water
How to make it
- Mix cow dung, cow urine, lime, and field soil in 20 litres of water
- Keep for 12 hours, stirring occasionally
- Filter and use within 24 hours (does not store well)
How to use it
- Method 1 (soaking): Soak seeds in Beejamrit solution for 30 minutes before sowing. Then spread in the shade to partially dry before sowing.
- Method 2 (coating): Spread seeds on a cloth, pour Beejamrit over them, mix by hand until all seeds are coated, then dry in the shade for 30-60 minutes before sowing.
- Seedlings: Dip roots of seedlings in Beejamrit solution for 30 minutes before transplanting.

Technique 3: Mulching — Protecting the Soil
Mulching means covering the soil surface between plants with organic material. This is not a new idea — forests do it naturally through leaf fall. ZBNF makes mulching a systematic farming practice.
Types of mulch
- Crop mulch (Jivamulcha): Use the residue from your previous crop — paddy straw, wheat stalks, groundnut pods, vegetable tops. Do not burn stubble. Lay it between rows of the current crop, 5-10 cm thick.
- Live mulch (Jeevamulcha): Grow low-growing companion plants between rows (e.g., dhaincha, glyricedia, subabul). These fix nitrogen and their cuttings become green manure when chopped.
- Dry mulch (Sookha Aavarana): Dried leaves, straw, or grass cut from borders of the field.

- Moisture retention: Reduces water requirement by 30-50% — crucial in low-rainfall or drought-prone areas

Technique 4: Waaphasa — Managing Soil Air and Water
The fourth wheel of ZBNF is perhaps the most conceptually important. Waaphasa is the state where soil contains approximately 50% solid particles, 25% water, and 25% air. At this ratio, both aerobic (oxygen-needing) and anaerobic soil bacteria function optimally, roots grow easily, and plants absorb nutrients most efficiently.
Practical implications of Waaphasa
- Do not flood-irrigate unnecessarily. Excess water pushes out air, kills aerobic bacteria, and creates anaerobic (rotten-smelling) conditions. Water when soil is approaching dryness, not before.
- Check soil moisture with the hand test: Take a handful of soil at root depth. If it forms a ball but crumbles when pressed — Waaphasa is ideal. If it oozes water — too wet. If it doesn't form a ball — too dry.
- Drip irrigation is ideal for maintaining Waaphasa — small, frequent water delivery keeps soil at ideal moisture without flooding.
- Avoid deep plowing: Deep tillage disrupts the soil structure that supports Waaphasa. ZBNF recommends shallow tillage (5-10 cm) or, eventually, no-till farming.
