He later said that signing the letter was "the one great mistake in my life," and added that had he known the Germans would fail to build the bomb, he "would have done nothing." He spent his remaining years campaigning against nuclear weapons and for peace, insisting that scientists bear a moral responsibility for what their discoveries are used to do.

The Man Who Never Stopped Questioning
Einstein worked to the very end, still chasing a "unified theory" that would tie all of physics together — a goal that eluded him, but that he refused to abandon, because the questioning itself was the point. On 18 April 1955, in Princeton, an aneurysm in his abdomen ruptured. Offered surgery that might have extended his life, he refused it, saying it was tasteless to prolong life artificially: "I have done my share, it is time to go. I will do it elegantly."
