In 1962, when Vikram Sarabhai proposed that India launch a space programme, the reaction of many sensible people was polite disbelief. India was a newly independent nation, still grappling with poverty, food shortages, and the basic challenge of building a functioning democracy and economy. Space — the domain of the Americans and Soviets, backed by billions of dollars and decades of industrial infrastructure — seemed an almost absurd ambition.

Sarabhai's response to the skeptics was not defensive. It was clarifying. He did not argue that India should have a space programme because it would make India powerful, or prestigious, or because it was a race to be won. He argued something more specific and more practical: that space technology — communications satellites, remote sensing, weather prediction — was precisely the tool that a large, diverse, geographically complex nation like India needed to solve its most fundamental development challenges. Television education for remote villages. Satellite communication connecting the country's vast geography. Forecasting monsoons and natural disasters. Finding mineral resources for industry. Space was not escapism — it was a development strategy.

That argument, articulated in the 1960s, proved entirely correct. India's INSAT satellites transformed rural broadcasting and telecommunications. RESOURCESAT maps the country's agricultural land and water bodies. Cyclone warnings from Indian meteorological satellites have saved hundreds of thousands of lives. ISRO's entire mission — right down to the Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan missions of the 21st century — traces its philosophical DNA directly back to the vision Vikram Sarabhai wrote down in 1962.

He was 52 years old when he died, suddenly and unexpectedly, on 30 December 1971. He never saw his rockets fully realised. He never saw India's astronauts in space. But the institution he built did all of that and more, because he had been precise enough about the vision that others could carry it forward after he was gone.

A Privileged Beginning — and What He Did With It

Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai was born on 12 August 1919 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, into one of India's most distinguished and wealthy industrial families. The Sarabhais were a household name in Gujarat — their textile businesses, civic contributions, and connections to the independence movement (Vikram's father Ambalal was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi) made them a family of immense privilege and public responsibility.

The Sarabhai home, called "The Retreat," was not merely a house. It was a cultural institution — regularly visited by Rabindranath Tagore, Jawaharlal Nehru, and some of the most important intellectual and political figures of the era. Vikram grew up in an environment where ideas mattered as much as commerce, where civic responsibility was assumed, and where the connection between individual success and national development was part of the family's identity.

He was educated at home initially (by private tutors in a school his mother Sarla had established), and proved to be a gifted student with a particular flair for the sciences. He was sent to England at 17 to study at Cambridge (St. John's College), where he read Natural Sciences, graduating with a Tripos in 1940.

The outbreak of World War II brought him back to India in 1940, and he joined the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru under the mentorship of Sir C. V. Raman — India's Nobel laureate physicist. It was here, studying cosmic rays (high-energy radiation that reaches Earth from space), that Sarabhai found his scientific calling. He returned to Cambridge after the war and in 1947 received his PhD in cosmic ray physics.

He was 28 years old, had a doctorate from Cambridge, came from a wealthy family, and could have lived very comfortably in academia or business. He had, instead, a much larger idea.

Sarabhai used his family's wealth and connections as a platform to build things that would outlast him and serve people far beyond his social circle. Apply it: whatever advantages you have — education, family support, connections, early success — ask yourself: what am I building with this that will matter in 20 years? Founding PRL — A Laboratory Born of Conviction

In 1947, the same year India achieved independence, Sarabhai founded the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad — with support from his family and the Ahmedabad Education Society. He was 28.

PRL was created to do fundamental scientific research in India — cosmic rays, atmospheric science, space physics. The founding of PRL was an act of faith: faith that India needed its own world-class scientific institutions, not just scientists who went abroad to do research and stayed. Sarabhai was determined to demonstrate that excellent science could be done in India, by Indians, for India's benefit.

He succeeded. PRL became one of India's finest scientific institutions. It attracted talented researchers, published significant research, and eventually became the intellectual seedbed from which India's space programme would grow.

What is remarkable about PRL's founding is that it happened when it did — in a newly independent country, with almost no existing scientific infrastructure, immediately, without waiting for conditions to be ideal. Sarabhai didn't wait for the government to build a laboratory. He built one.

The lesson — and how to apply it: Don't wait for permission or perfect conditions to build something necessary. Sarabhai saw the gap — India had no world-class physics research institution — and instead of hoping someone else would fill it, he filled it himself, with the resources he had access to. Apply it: identify the gap in your community, school, organisation, or field that you have both the ability and the resources (even modest ones) to begin addressing. The perfect moment and the ideal conditions are never coming. The question is: can you begin, imperfectly, today?

Convincing a Nation to Look at Space

By the late 1950s and early 1960s, the Space Age had begun — the Soviets launched Sputnik in 1957, then put Yuri Gagarin in orbit in 1961. The world was suddenly paying attention to space in a new way.

Sarabhai, who had been studying cosmic rays and upper atmospheric phenomena for years, saw immediately that space technology was not merely a geopolitical competition — it was an extraordinary set of practical tools for developing nations. He began articulating this vision with unusual clarity and persuasiveness.

He found a powerful ally in Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, who shared his conviction that science and technology were central to India's development. Nehru introduced Sarabhai to Dr. Homi Bhabha — the physicist who headed India's Atomic Energy Commission — and the three of them together formed the intellectual leadership that would shape India's scientific ambitions in the post-independence decades.

In 1962, Sarabhai convinced the government to establish the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR) — the precursor to ISRO. He was appointed its chairman. India's space programme had officially begun.

But "officially begun" was a relative phrase. What India actually had at that point was a visionary, a committee, almost no funding, no rockets, no launch infrastructure, and no engineers trained in space technology. Building from this point would require a kind of creative audacity that most institutions never summon.

The lesson — and how to apply it: A compelling, specific vision — one that explains not just what you want to do but exactly why it matters — can mobilise support that ordinary proposals cannot. Sarabhai didn't argue for space because it was exciting or because it would make India proud. He argued for it because it would solve specific, concrete problems for ordinary Indians: education access, weather forecasting, agricultural planning. Apply it: whatever you are trying to build or change, articulate the "why" with the same specificity. Not "this will be great" but "this will solve X problem for Y people in Z way." Try it: State your most important current goal in one sentence that answers: who benefits, how specifically, and why this matters more than the alternatives.

Thumba — Building a Launch Site in a Coconut Grove

The story of how India's first rocket launch site was built is one of the most extraordinary episodes in the history of science in developing countries.

Sarabhai selected Thumba, a small fishing village on the southwestern coast of Kerala, near Thiruvananthapuram, as the site for India's launch facility. He chose it because it sits almost exactly on the Earth's magnetic equator — an ideal location for studying the upper atmosphere and ionosphere with scientific rockets.

There was one problem: the land was occupied by a fishing community and, crucially, the St. Mary Magdalene Church — the local parish church was right in the middle of the proposed launch site.

What happened next is famous in ISRO lore. Sarabhai and the Indian government did not simply acquire the land by eminent domain — they negotiated. They met with the local Bishop, explained the scientific purpose, asked for cooperation, and the church and community agreed to relocate. The Bishop gave the church building to ISRO for use as a rocket fabrication facility; the Bishop's house became the Space Science and Technology Centre. Church pews were used as work benches.

The first rockets were assembled in the church, their components transported on bicycles and bullock carts to the launch site. The first foreign scientists who visited recalled being astonished that serious scientific work was being done in these conditions — but the work was serious, and the results were real. India's first sounding rocket, a Nike Apache, was launched on 21 November 1963. The Indian space programme had lifted off.

What Thumba represents is something important: resourcefulness, improvisation, and community partnership as legitimate scientific methods. ISRO did not wait for a gleaming purpose-built facility with all the right infrastructure. It built the programme with what it had, where it was possible, in partnership with the community that lived there.

The lesson — and how to apply it: The most creative and enduring solutions often come from working with constraints, not despite them. Sarabhai didn't bemoan that India lacked a purpose-built launch facility — he put rocket parts on bicycles and used a church as a fabrication hall, and he launched a rocket from there. Apply it: make a list of the constraints in your current work or project. For each constraint, ask: "What can I do with exactly these limitations, right now?" Constraints force creativity that abundant resources often prevent. Try it: Identify the one most limiting constraint in your most important current project. Spend 20 minutes listing every possible approach that works within that constraint, before seeking to remove it.

Building Institutions — The Scale of Sarabhai's Vision

What sets Sarabhai apart from most scientists — even great ones — is the extraordinary range of institutions he founded or co-founded. He did not just do science; he built the systems in which science could flourish.

The answer is revealing: Sarabhai understood that a great scientist does research that lasts her lifetime. His Approach to Leadership — Listening More Than Directing

People who worked with Sarabhai consistently describe a leadership style that was unusual for its time and place: he was a listener, not a commander. He attracted brilliant people and created conditions for them to do their best work, rather than directing their every move.

A. P. J. Abdul Kalam — who joined ISRO under Sarabhai and later became India's President — wrote extensively about Sarabhai's impact on him. In his autobiography Wings of Fire, Kalam described how Sarabhai, seeing a young rocket engineer from a humble background with enormous potential, invested deeply in his development — not through formal mentoring programmes, but through simple, generous attention. He included Kalam in important meetings, listened to his ideas seriously, and sent him abroad for training that Kalam would never have accessed otherwise.

Sarabhai's model was: find the most talented people you can, give them the clearest possible vision, give them resources and autonomy, and then trust them. He was not a micromanager. He was a direction-setter and an enabler.

Sarabhai found talented people, trusted them with the vision, gave them autonomy, and invested in their growth. The Last Years and the Legacy

The final decade of Sarabhai's life — the 1960s — was enormously productive. ISRO was formally established in 1969, with Sarabhai as its first Chairman. The Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE), which he conceived in detail — a programme to use American satellites to broadcast educational television directly to rural Indian villages — was being planned and would launch after his death in 1975-76. The first phase of ISRO's sounding rocket programme was well underway.

He was also deeply engaged with India's atomic energy programme (as head of the Atomic Energy Commission after Homi Bhabha's death in 1966), with his family's philanthropy, and with a remarkable range of other projects.

On 30 December 1971, at the Kovalam Beach Resort near Thiruvananthapuram — where he had come to oversee the rocket programme — Vikram Sarabhai died in his sleep, unexpectedly, of cardiac arrest. He was 52.

The nation was shocked. He was, at that point, probably the most important scientist in India. He had been to a dinner that evening, discussed the space programme with colleagues, and gone to sleep. He did not wake up.

The institutions he had built — not his personal memory, but the living systems — did the rest. ISRO launched India's first satellite Aryabhata in 1975. SITE broadcast educational television to 2,400 villages in 1975-76. INSAT communications satellites transformed Indian telecommunications through the 1980s and 1990s. IRS (Indian Remote Sensing) satellites mapped the country in detail from the 1980s. Then: Chandrayaan-1 in 2008 (found evidence of water on the Moon). Mangalyaan in 2013-14 (reached Mars on the first attempt, cheaper than a Hollywood movie). Chandrayaan-3 in 2023 (India's first soft lunar landing, making India the fourth country to land on the Moon).

None of this would have happened without the Physical Research Laboratory he founded in 1947 at age 28, the ISRO he built in the 1960s, and the extraordinary team of scientists he recruited, trusted, and developed.

The lesson — and how to apply it: The most powerful legacy is not what you do yourself — it is the institution, the culture, and the people you leave behind. Sarabhai died before his most important projects were completed. But the systems he built were so well designed that they completed themselves without him. He was, perhaps above all, a man who took his country's potential seriously at a moment when many of his contemporaries had settled for much less. That seriousness of purpose — the refusal to accept a diminished future — is his most important legacy.

  • Build institutions, not just outputs. A paper lasts a season; an institution lasts generations. Think about what systems, communities, and structures would multiply your work's impact beyond your own direct effort.
  • Trust the people you work with. Sarabhai's greatest gift to Indian science was not his research — it was the scientists he recruited, trusted, and developed. Abdul Kalam, Satish Dhawan, and dozens of others built careers under his leadership that long outlasted him.
  • Start now, with what you have. PRL was founded the same year India gained independence. INCOSPAR was formed with almost no resources. Sarabhai never waited for conditions to be ideal. He built what he could, when he could, with what he had.
