You are currently paying for courses on Udemy, Coursera, or YouTube premium. Meanwhile, the Indian government runs a platform where IIT professors teach the same subjects — for free, with government-recognised certificates, and with credits that count toward your college degree.

That platform is SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds). It was launched in 2017 under the Ministry of Education and now hosts over 5,000 courses across every subject. The courses are taught by faculty from IITs, IIMs, IISc, NITs, IGNOU, and top central universities.

Most students at regular colleges across India have never heard of it.

What Is SWAYAM — In Plain Terms

SWAYAM is a website where you watch video lectures, complete weekly assignments, and take a final exam. If you pass, you get a certificate. If you choose to take a paid proctored exam (at an examination centre), the certificate carries the name of the teaching institution — IIT Madras, IIM Bangalore, IGNOU, etc.

The course content is the same as what students at those institutions study. The professors are the same. The only difference is you are studying independently, online.

There are four national coordinators who manage different subject areas:

  • NPTEL — Engineering, technology, sciences (IITs and IISc)

  • CEC — Arts, humanities, social sciences

  • IGNOU — Distance education courses, vocational skills

  • NITTTR — Technical teacher education

How to Get Started: Step by Step

Step 1 — Register on SWAYAM

Go to swayam.gov.in and click "Register." You need:

  • Name and email address

  • Mobile number for OTP verification

  • No document upload required

Registration is instant and free.

Step 2 — Find a Course

On the homepage, browse by:

  • Subject (engineering, management, law, social science, etc.)

  • Institution (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIM Calcutta, etc.)

  • Duration (4 weeks to 20 weeks)

  • Start date (courses run in semesters; new ones start every January and July)

Best way to browse: Go to swayam.gov.in → "Courses" → filter by discipline and duration.

Step 3 — Enroll in a Course

Click "Enroll Now" on any course. Some start on a fixed date (semester-based). Others are self-paced and you can start immediately.

Once enrolled, you get access to:

  • All video lectures (downloadable for offline viewing)

  • Weekly reading materials and assignments

  • Discussion forums with other students and sometimes the professor

Step 4 — Complete the Course

Each course has:

  • 4–12 video lectures per week (typically 20–30 minutes each)

  • Weekly graded assignments (multiple choice, usually)

  • A final exam at the end

Your score is based on 25% weekly assignments + 75% final exam (weightage varies by course).

Step 5 — Get Your Certificate

Free completion certificate: If you score 40%+ (varies by course), you get a free digital certificate downloadable as PDF.

Proctored exam certificate (recommended): Pay ₹1,000–₹1,500 per course. You take the exam at a designated centre (like a test centre or your college). This certificate is signed by the teaching institution and carries more weight with employers.

Register for the proctored exam when enrollment opens — usually 4–6 weeks before the course ends. Check the course page for the exam date and nearest centre.

Credit Transfer — The Most Powerful Feature

Under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the UGC has directed all universities to accept SWAYAM credits toward your degree. A student can earn up to 40% of their total degree credits from SWAYAM courses instead of regular college courses.

What this means practically:
If your B.Com degree requires 120 credits and you do SWAYAM courses worth 48 credits — you are studying those subjects at potentially IIM-level quality while getting credit for your degree at your college.

How to get credit transferred:

  1. Complete the SWAYAM course with a proctored exam certificate (required for credit transfer)

  2. Apply to your college's academic section with your certificate

  3. The college maps the SWAYAM course to the equivalent course in your programme

  4. Credits are added to your degree transcript

Check with your college first. Not all colleges have implemented this equally — some are ahead, some are still setting up the process. Ask your academic office about SWAYAM credit transfer before enrolling if credit transfer is your primary goal.

Common Questions

Can I take multiple courses at once?
Yes. Most students take 1–2 courses at a time. Some manage 3–4 if the workload is manageable.

Will the certificate name my college or the teaching institution?
The proctored certificate is issued by the teaching institution (e.g., IIT Madras), not your college. Your college's name does not appear.

What happens if I fail?
You can re-enroll in the next semester offering of the same course. SWAYAM courses repeat every 6 months. There is no penalty for failing or not completing.

Can school students (Class 10–12) enroll?
Yes. There is no age restriction. School students can take foundation-level courses in math, science, and computing. IGNOU specifically offers school-level content.

Do I need a fast internet connection?
No. Videos are available in lower resolution for slow connections. Most can also be downloaded for offline viewing.
