For most Indian families, the biggest single financial shock is a parent or grandparent falling seriously ill. One hospital admission — a heart procedure, a cancer treatment, a hip replacement — can wipe out a lifetime of savings. And private health insurance for someone over 70 is either impossibly expensive or simply unavailable.
In October 2024, the government closed that gap. Under Ayushman Vay Vandana, every Indian aged 70 and above is entitled to ₹5 lakh a year of free hospital treatment — regardless of income, and even if they are wealthy or already have other insurance. The only document needed is an Aadhaar card. This guide shows you exactly how to get it for the elders in your family, before you need it.
What Makes This Different
Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) already gave ₹5 lakh cover to the poorer half of India. Ayushman Vay Vandana extends that same cover to all senior citizens aged 70+ as a distinct benefit — with three features that matter enormously:
- Income does not matter. A retired officer, a farmer, a shopkeeper's parents — everyone 70+ qualifies. There is no poverty test.
- Pre-existing conditions are covered from day one. There is no waiting period — diabetes, heart disease, kidney problems already present are all covered immediately.
- It is on top of what you have. If your elders are already covered under regular PM-JAY, they get an additional dedicated ₹5 lakh top-up just for seniors. If they have private insurance, they can still take this cover too.
What It Covers
The cover works cashless at any empanelled hospital (government and many private). It pays for around 2,000 treatment packages — hospitalisation, surgeries, cancer care, cardiac procedures, dialysis, joint replacements, ICU stays, diagnostics, medicines during admission, and follow-up. There is no cap on family size for the senior benefit — the ₹5 lakh is a dedicated cover for the elders aged 70+.
Crucially, the money is used only when needed and refreshes every year. It is not a payout you receive — it is a guarantee that when your 70+ parent is admitted at an empanelled hospital, the bill up to ₹5 lakh is settled directly, and your family pays nothing.
How to Use It at the Hospital
Keep the card (a soft copy on the phone is fine) with the senior's Aadhaar. When admission is needed:
- Choose an empanelled hospital — check the list on the Ayushman App or ask the hospital's "Ayushman Mitra"/PM-JAY help desk.
- Show the Ayushman Vay Vandana card and Aadhaar at that desk at the time of admission.
- The hospital verifies eligibility and provides cashless treatment up to ₹5 lakh — you do not pay and later claim; the hospital settles directly with the scheme.
If a hospital refuses or demands money for a covered treatment, call 14555 and raise a grievance — the cashless entitlement is your right at an empanelled hospital.
If you have a parent or grandparent aged 70 or above, make their Ayushman Vay Vandana card today — free, on the Ayushman App with just their Aadhaar, or at any CSC or empanelled hospital counter. It gives them ₹5 lakh of cashless hospital treatment every year, with no income test and no waiting period for existing illnesses. The card costs nothing to make and could save your family lakhs at the worst possible moment. The only mistake is waiting until the day you actually need it.
What You Can Do
- Make the card now on the Ayushman App or beneficiary.nha.gov.in — you only need the senior's Aadhaar; enrolment is free.
- Can't do it online? Visit a Common Service Centre (CSC) or the Ayushman desk at an empanelled hospital — they do it free.
- It's for every 70+ Indian — no income limit; pre-existing conditions covered from day one; available even if they have other insurance.
- Keep the card and Aadhaar together and know your nearest empanelled hospitals in advance.
- Insist on cashless treatment at empanelled hospitals — never pay for a covered package; raise a grievance on 14555 if refused.
- Help elderly neighbours enrol too — many 70+ Indians don't know this benefit exists.
Old age should not mean fear of the hospital bill. This one free card turns a family's biggest financial danger into a settled entitlement. Make it before you need it.
