A college student in Patna lost his original Class 12 marksheet while travelling. Getting a duplicate from the CBSE cost ₹500, three weeks, and two trips to the board office. His friend, who lost the same document, opened the DigiLocker app on his phone, tapped "CBSE", and had the digitally signed, officially valid marksheet ready to share in four minutes.

DigiLocker is not a scan. Documents issued through DigiLocker carry a digital signature from the issuing authority — the CBSE, the VAHAN system, the Income Tax Department — and are legally valid under the IT Act 2000 in exactly the same way as the original physical document. Courts, banks, government offices, and police are required to accept them.

Most people have never opened the app. Here is everything you need.

What DigiLocker Is — and Is Not

DigiLocker (digilocker.gov.in), operated by the Ministry of Electronics & IT, has two kinds of storage:

1. Issued Documents (most important): Documents that government departments push directly to your DigiLocker — these are digitally signed by the issuer. You do not upload them; you pull them. Examples: Aadhaar e-copy, Driving Licence, Vehicle RC, PAN card, CBSE 10th and 12th marksheets, Income Tax Return acknowledgement, COVID vaccination certificate, Voter ID (EPIC), EPFO passbook.

2. Uploaded Documents (your own scans): A 1 GB personal storage where you upload scans of documents not yet available digitally — property papers, hospital records, etc. These are NOT digitally signed by the government; treat them as convenient copies, not legally equivalent originals.

The issued documents are the valuable part. They are original, not copies.

Setting Up DigiLocker: Ten Minutes, Done

You need: a mobile number linked to Aadhaar, and your Aadhaar number.

  1. Download the DigiLocker app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Search "DigiLocker" — the official app is published by "National e-Governance Division."
  2. Open the app and tap "Sign Up."
  3. Enter your mobile number (the one linked to your Aadhaar). You will receive an OTP.
  4. After OTP verification, enter your Aadhaar number and complete Aadhaar-based eKYC — another OTP to your Aadhaar-linked number.
  5. Set a 6-digit security PIN for the app. This is your daily login PIN — keep it private.
  6. Your account is ready. The home screen will show "Issued Documents" and "My Drive."

You can also access DigiLocker on a computer at digilocker.gov.in — useful for downloading or printing documents on a larger screen.

Troubleshooting setup: If your mobile number is not linked to Aadhaar, you cannot complete eKYC. Visit the nearest Aadhaar enrolment centre (often in post offices and banks) to link your mobile — it takes 10 minutes and is free.

Documents Available and How to Pull Them

After setup, tap "Search Documents" or use the issuer search to add documents to your profile:

Driving Licence and Vehicle RC

  • Tap the "Transport" section or search "VAHAN."
  • Your driving licence and vehicle registration certificate (RC) pull automatically if your Aadhaar is linked to your driving licence in the transport department database.
  • If they don't appear: Go to the Parivahan portal (parivahan.gov.in) and link your Aadhaar and mobile with your DL/RC number. Return to DigiLocker within 24 hours.
  • The mParivahan app (a companion app) shows your DL and RC in an even simpler format designed specifically for traffic police checking. Install both.
  • Police are required to accept DigiLocker/mParivahan DL for traffic stops. You cannot be asked to produce the physical card if you show the digital one.

Aadhaar (e-Aadhaar)

  • The e-Aadhaar card is available in your DigiLocker automatically after linking.
  • It carries a digital signature from UIDAI and is fully valid for any purpose where Aadhaar is required — bank account opening, SIM, government scheme enrollment.
  • Tip: For giving Aadhaar to a shopkeeper or vendor, use the "Masked Aadhaar" option from the UIDAI app or uidai.gov.in — it shows only the last 4 digits of your Aadhaar number. Giving your full Aadhaar to untrusted parties is unnecessary.

PAN Card

  • Search "Income Tax Department" in DigiLocker, log in with your PAN and date of birth.
  • Your PAN card is available as a digitally signed PDF.
  • Useful as backup if you lose your physical card; also accepted for KYC at banks and financial institutions.

CBSE Marksheets and Passing Certificates (Class 10 and 12)

  • Search "CBSE" in DigiLocker.
  • Enter your roll number and year of examination.
  • Both Class 10 and 12 marksheets and passing certificates are pulled digitally — signed by CBSE.
  • These are accepted by colleges, employers, and government offices exactly like originals.
  • Other boards (UP Board, Maharashtra Board, etc.) and universities are being added progressively — check the DigiLocker issuer directory for your board.

COVID Vaccination Certificate

  • Already available under "Ministry of Health & Family Welfare" in most accounts. If not, link using your mobile number used during vaccination registration.

Income Tax Return Acknowledgement (ITR-V)

  • Search "Income Tax Department" — after linking your PAN, ITR acknowledgements for previous years appear.
  • Useful for loan applications where banks demand ITR proof.

Voter ID (EPIC)

  • Search "Election Commission of India."
  • Enter your EPIC number (Voter ID number). Your Voter ID card is pulled as a digitally signed document.
  • Accepted as valid address and identity proof.

Sharing Documents Without Giving Away Your Files

DigiLocker lets you share documents directly — no need to print, photocopy, or hand over files:

  • Open any issued document in the app and tap "Share."
  • You can share via WhatsApp, email, or generate a link. The recipient sees the digitally signed document.
  • For bank KYC or government forms, many websites now have a "Fetch from DigiLocker" button — click it, log in with your DigiLocker PIN, and the document is transferred securely without you uploading anything.

When DigiLocker Is Most Useful

  • Traffic police check: Show DL and RC from mParivahan or DigiLocker. No challan for not carrying physical cards.
  • New bank account or loan application: Submit Aadhaar, PAN, and ITR digitally from DigiLocker. No photocopies.
  • Job application or college admission: Share CBSE marksheets and passing certificate directly. No originals required.
  • Lost documents: If your DL, RC, or marksheet is lost or stolen, DigiLocker has a legal copy — usable immediately while you apply for a duplicate physical.
  • Government scheme enrollment: Aadhaar and PAN from DigiLocker accepted for PM Kisan, Ayushman Bharat, and most other scheme registrations.

Security: What to Know

  • Your documents cannot be accessed by anyone without your 6-digit PIN and OTP. DigiLocker uses two-factor authentication.
  • Do not share your DigiLocker PIN or the OTP with anyone. A government office asking for your PIN is a red flag.
  • If your phone is lost: Log into digilocker.gov.in on another device, go to Settings, and deactivate the app remotely. Your documents are safe in the cloud; they are not stored on the phone itself.
  • DigiLocker does not share your documents with any third party without your explicit consent. Each time you share, you initiate and confirm the action.

What You Can Do

  • Set up DigiLocker today — it takes 10 minutes. Even if you don't need it immediately, having your DL and RC digitally accessible is useful within a month.
  • Link your Aadhaar to your driving licence on parivahan.gov.in if your DL doesn't appear in DigiLocker.
  • Install mParivahan as well — designed specifically for traffic scenarios; shows DL and RC in a format officers recognise.
  • Pull your children's CBSE marksheets before they are needed for college admissions — do it now, not during the busy application season.
  • Tell elderly family members about the Voter ID and Aadhaar in DigiLocker — often the most useful documents for the senior citizens who lose physical cards most often.
  • Helpline: 1800-3000-3468 (toll-free) or email support@digilocker.gov.in for any account issues.

A digital locker does not protect against every problem. But it removes the single most common documentation crisis in India — the scramble for a document when you are standing at a counter, or the expense and delay of replacing one after it is lost. Ten minutes of setup now saves hours of frustration later.
