A man in Gorakhpur used to take two days off work, travel 60 kilometres, and stand in multiple queues to get a document from a government office. Last month, he did the same task in eight minutes from his phone, while sitting at home.

Digital India is not just a slogan. Hundreds of government services have genuinely moved online — and for most of them, a basic Android smartphone and a mobile internet connection is all you need. The gap is not technology. It is awareness. Most people simply don't know which service lives where, or that the service exists on their phone at all.

This guide closes that gap. Below are 20 government services you can access from your phone right now, with the exact app or website for each one. We have organised them by what you need them for, so you can jump to the section relevant to you.

Before You Start: Three Apps to Install First

Before anything else, install these three apps. They are the foundation for most government digital services:

1. DigiLocker (digilocker.gov.in or Play Store)
Stores your government documents digitally — Aadhar card, driving licence, vehicle RC, PAN card, school/college mark sheets, caste and income certificates. Documents in DigiLocker are legally valid and accepted by banks, airports, police, and courts under the IT Act.

2. UMANG (umang.gov.in or Play Store)
A single app covering 1,200+ services from 400+ government departments and state governments — EPF, NPS, CBSE results, passport, Jan Dhan, Kisan schemes, and much more. Think of it as a one-stop government services app.

3. mParivahan (Play Store or parivahan.gov.in)
For all vehicle and driving licence related services — RC, driving licence, insurance status, challan check and payment, dealer details.
