A factory worker in Gurgaon left his job in March and moved back to his village in UP. He has ₹1.2 lakh in his EPF account. He doesn't know the balance. He assumes he will need to go back to Gurgaon, find his old employer, visit the EPFO office, and wait weeks.

He has a smartphone. He needs the UMANG app. In 20 minutes, he can check his balance, verify his KYC, and raise a withdrawal claim — from his village, without visiting any office.

UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) was built by the Ministry of Electronics & IT and NIC. It hosts over 1,900 government services from more than 300 central and state departments — in one app, on one login. The most valuable services — EPF, NPS, PM Awas, CBSE results, DigiLocker, state land records — are available to tens of crores of people who have never opened it.

Setting Up UMANG

Download from Google Play Store or Apple App Store — search "UMANG." The official app is published by "National e-Governance Division, Government of India."

Login options:

  • Mobile OTP — your registered mobile number, OTP sent. Fastest, no Aadhaar needed.

  • Aadhaar OTP — uses your Aadhaar-linked number. Gives access to more services.

  • mPIN — set a 4-digit PIN after first login for daily use without OTP.

After login, the home screen shows categories: Employment, Education, Health, Farmers, Finance, Utility. The search bar finds any service by name — "EPF", "NPS", "PM Kisan", "ration card."

EPF / PF Services — The Most Used Feature

If you are a salaried employee whose employer deducts EPF (Employees' Provident Fund), UMANG gives you full access to your EPFO account.

Check Your PF Balance

  1. Open UMANG → Search "EPFO" or tap "EPFO" under Employment
  2. Tap "Employee Centric Services"
  3. Select "View Passbook"
  4. Enter your UAN (Universal Account Number) — found on your salary slip, or get it from your employer
  5. Authenticate with OTP to your UAN-registered mobile
  6. Your passbook shows: employer contribution, employee contribution, and interest for every month

If you don't know your UAN: tap "Know Your UAN" on the EPFO section, enter your Aadhaar or PAN and mobile — the UAN appears within minutes.

Raise an EPF Withdrawal or Transfer Claim

Through UMANG → EPFO → "Raise Claim":

  • Form 31: Partial withdrawal (for medical emergency, marriage, education, home purchase)

  • Form 19: Full PF settlement (after 2 months of unemployment following resignation)

  • Form 10C: EPS (pension) withdrawal

  • Form 13: Transfer PF from old employer to new employer

Pre-requisite: Your Aadhaar, PAN, and bank account must be seeded (linked) to your UAN. Check under "Profile" → "KYC." If any is missing, ask your employer's HR to link it — claims are rejected if KYC is incomplete.

After submitting a claim through UMANG, track it under "Track Claim Status." Settlement typically arrives within 10–20 working days to your bank account.

Check EPF Passbook Without UMANG

Alternatively: epfindia.gov.in → "Member Passbook" — same data, accessed via browser. UMANG just puts it in app form.

NPS (National Pension System) Balance

If you contribute to NPS — either through your employer or voluntarily — UMANG shows your pension balance, contributions, and fund performance.

  1. Search "NPS" in UMANG
  2. Log in with your PRAN (Permanent Retirement Account Number) and registered mobile OTP
  3. View: Tier-I balance (locked till retirement), Tier-II balance (withdrawable), contribution history, and annualised returns

You can also generate your SOA (Statement of Account) and download it as PDF.

For partial withdrawals from NPS Tier-I (allowed after 3 years for specific purposes: children's education, medical emergency, home purchase), the withdrawal request can be initiated through the NPS portal (npscra.nsdl.co.in) or your nodal office — not directly through UMANG, which shows read-only data.

PM Kisan — Check Status and Raise Complaints

If you or a family member receives PM-KISAN (₹6,000/year in three instalments):

  1. Search "PM Kisan" in UMANG
  2. Check instalment status with your Aadhaar number or mobile number
  3. If an instalment is pending: tap "Know Your Beneficiary Status" to see why — common reasons: bank account not seeded, Aadhaar not verified, land records mismatch

UMANG shows the same data as pmkisan.gov.in but in a mobile-friendly format.

PM Awas Yojana (PMAY) — Beneficiary Status

For families waiting on PMAY housing:

  1. Search "PMAY" in UMANG → "Beneficiary Search"

  2. Enter your Application ID or Aadhaar to check: whether your application is approved, at which stage construction funding has been released, and what amount has been disbursed

Urban and rural PMAY are both accessible through UMANG.

CBSE Results and DigiLocker

CBSE: Results for Class 10 and 12 are available on UMANG as soon as they are declared — tap "CBSE" → "Results." Students can also download their provisional marksheet digitally from DigiLocker through UMANG's integrated DigiLocker tab.

DigiLocker within UMANG: Access your DigiLocker documents directly — Aadhaar, DL, RC, CBSE certificates — without switching apps.

State Services — Land Records, Ration Card, Certificates

UMANG integrates state-specific services that vary by state. Commonly available:

  • Land Records (Jamabandi / Khasra): States like UP (Bhulekh), Rajasthan, MP, and Maharashtra have land record lookup integrated. Search your state name + "land record" in UMANG.
  • Ration Card Status: Check PDS ration entitlement and transaction history in states that have integrated.
  • Birth / Death Certificate: Many states allow certificate download.
  • Driving Licence / Vehicle RC: Through the integrated VAHAN service — or open DigiLocker inside UMANG.
  • e-Hospital (AIIMS/Central Hospitals): Book OPD appointments at AIIMS Delhi, AIIMS Bhopal, Safdarjung, RML, and other central hospitals — no physical queue needed.

EPFO Grievance Through UMANG

If a PF claim is stuck, wrongly rejected, or an employer has not deposited your contribution:

  1. UMANG → EPFO → "EPFiGMS" (Grievance Management System)

  2. Register a complaint with your UAN and describe the issue

  3. Track the complaint status — EPFO regional offices are required to respond within 30 days

Alternatively: epfigms.gov.in on browser, or call the EPFO helpline 1800-118-005 (toll-free).

What You Can Do

  • Download UMANG from the Play Store or App Store today — it's free and takes 2 minutes to set up with your mobile OTP.
  • Check your PF balance first. Many people don't know how much is in their EPF account. UMANG → EPFO → View Passbook. Enter your UAN.
  • If you left a job and haven't transferred or withdrawn PF: Raise a claim through UMANG → EPFO → Raise Claim. Unclaimed PF earns interest at 8.25% (FY 2024-25 rate) but it is your money — claim it or transfer it.
  • For NPS contributors: Check your Tier-II balance — it is withdrawable at any time and may be sitting unnoticed.
  • Book hospital OPD appointments at central government hospitals through UMANG → "e-Hospital" instead of standing in queues.
  • Share UMANG with a retired family member. NPS balance, PPO status, and pension disbursal from EPFO (for EPS pensioners) are all accessible through the app.

The government built this so that citizens don't need to visit offices for information they are entitled to have on their phone. The gap is simply that most people don't know it exists. Now you do.
