In the summer of 1943, a seventeen-year-old boy named Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan was sitting in his home in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, when accounts began filtering in of what was happening in Bengal. People were dying — not in war, not in a drought, not in a flood, but of pure, mechanical starvation. Fields existed. Farms existed. Food existed — somewhere. And yet two to three million human beings, in the northeastern corner of the same country where he ate his meals every evening, were dying because they could not reach it.

The boy, whose father had died when he was eleven and who was planning, like the rest of his family hoped, to become a doctor, could not let the question go: how is this possible? How can a country with this much land, this much sun, this much water, not feed its own people?

He changed course. Instead of medicine, he chose agriculture — the science of feeding people. He spent the next eighty years answering the question the Bengal Famine had planted in him. In the 1960s, he and his colleagues turned India from a nation that imported American wheat to survive into a country that produced more than it needed. He shared that breakthrough with every farmer, village, and district he could reach. And then — in a moment of rare scientific courage — he publicly declared that what he had helped build was incomplete, that the Green Revolution was eating itself alive through chemical overuse, soil exhaustion, and water depletion, and that they needed to start again, better.

He lived to 98, working almost to the end. He died on 28 September 2023. Few lives in modern India contain as many practical lessons about how to choose a problem, pursue it with rigour, share the results honestly, and have the humility to keep revising your own answers.

A Family of Healers — and a Boy Who Lost His Father at Eleven

Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan was born on 7 August 1925 in Kumbakonam, a temple town in the Cauvery delta region of Tamil Nadu. His family's name came from Mankombu, the village in Kerala they had originally come from — a fact he would carry with pride and acknowledgement throughout his life.

His father, Dr. M.K. Sambasivan, was a medical doctor — respected, community-minded, and deeply committed to serving the people around him rather than merely building a practice. This ethos of professional skill in service of community need was the founding atmosphere of Swaminathan's childhood. Medicine was the family calling, and it was assumed the boy would follow.

Then, when Swaminathan was eleven years old, his father died.

The loss was defining — not because it derailed him, but because it deepened something. He saw, at an age when most children are simply children, what it means when a community loses the person who tends to it. He saw his mother cope. He saw neighbors step in. He understood, at an elemental level, that service — real service, not performed service — is what holds communities together. His father had provided it. The question of how he would provide it would take another decade to answer.

The lesson — and how to apply it: Early loss and hardship often clarify rather than destroy purpose. Rather than asking "why did this happen to me?", ask "what does this make urgent?" Swaminathan's father's death sharpened his sense that a life should serve others. 1943: The Famine That Changed Everything

The question of what he would dedicate his service to came not from his family but from Bengal.

The Bengal Famine of 1943 was one of the worst man-made disasters in human history. Historians and economists — including Amartya Sen, in his landmark work on famines — have since shown that the 1943 famine was not caused by a shortage of food in Bengal, but by a collapse in people's ability to access food: wartime price inflation, hoarding, export policies that continued even as people starved, and an administration that was slow to respond. Two to three million people died. Images of skeletal bodies on the streets of Calcutta circulated across India.

Swaminathan was seventeen. He was preparing for college, with a plan — his family's plan, and a reasonable one — to study medicine. But as he absorbed what had happened in Bengal, a different question lodged itself in his mind. India had land. India had farmers. India had sun and monsoon and rich river delta soil. And yet this catastrophe had been possible. The root of the problem, as he understood it in the way a seventeen-year-old understands big things — partially, intuitively, but correctly — was that Indian agriculture was fragile, underpowered, and badly understood.

He made his decision. He would study agriculture. He enrolled at the Coimbatore Agricultural College (now Tamil Nadu Agricultural University) in 1940 and then went to the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) in New Delhi for further study, graduating with a post-graduate degree in genetics and plant breeding.

He was sharp enough to pass the Indian Police Service examination in 1947 — the year India became independent. He did not take up the post. Agriculture was still the answer to his question.

He went to Cambridge University in England to study for his PhD in genetics, then to Wageningen University in the Netherlands, and then to the University of Wisconsin in the United States for postdoctoral research. Everywhere he went, he was specifically working on plant genetics — the science of why crops grow the way they do and how they can be improved. He returned to India in 1954 and joined IARI as a researcher.

The lesson — and how to apply it: The most powerful compass for a career is not comfort or prestige — it is a question you cannot stop asking. Swaminathan chose an underpaid, unglamorous field because a famine photograph had made a question unavoidable. Try it: What injustice, failure, or gap in the world do you find yourself thinking about repeatedly — not just worrying about, but asking why and how do we fix this? That question is a more reliable guide than any salary comparison.

The Science of Seeds — Building the Foundation

Through the 1950s and early 1960s, Swaminathan worked methodically at IARI on what might appear to be narrow, technical questions — the genetics of rice and wheat varieties, the hereditary traits that determine yield, disease resistance, and adaptability to Indian growing conditions.

This was not glamorous work. It did not make headlines. It was the painstaking, necessary, irreplaceable groundwork that every practical breakthrough requires but that the world rarely credits.

By the early 1960s, India was in deep trouble.

The country's population was growing at a pace that agricultural output could not match. India was dependent on PL-480 food aid from the United States — American surplus grain, shipped in on unfavorable terms that left India politically and economically vulnerable. Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, in 1965, appealed to Indians to skip one meal a week. The situation was described, not hyperbolically, as a race between population and starvation.

The answer was sitting in a Mexican agricultural research station.

The American agronomist Norman Borlaug, working at CIMMYT (International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre) in Mexico, had spent years developing semi-dwarf wheat varieties — plants engineered to have shorter, stronger stalks that would not collapse under the weight of large grain heads, and that responded enormously to fertilizer. In wheat trials in Mexico, yields had jumped by factors of two and three.

The problem was that nobody knew whether Mexican wheat would work in Indian soil and Indian climate.

The Green Revolution — Science Meets Punjab Farms

Swaminathan had been tracking Borlaug's work. In 1963, he invited Borlaug to India to test the varieties at IARI. The initial trial results were, in the careful language of scientific papers, "encouraging." Swaminathan was more than encouraged. He believed he was looking at the answer to the question he had been carrying since 1943.

What followed was a masterclass in how to convert a laboratory result into a national transformation — a skill that is different from, and as important as, the science itself.

Swaminathan understood that importing wheat seeds and planting them at a research station was not enough. The varieties had to be adapted to Indian agro-climatic conditions — India's soil types, rainfall patterns, and temperatures differed significantly from Mexico's. The seeds had to be multiplied to a scale where millions of farmers could access them. Farmers had to be convinced to try something new. Government had to be convinced to back the shift with procurement guarantees and subsidised fertilizer. Irrigation infrastructure had to be in place.

He worked on all of these simultaneously.

Together with Borlaug and a team of Indian agricultural scientists and extension workers, Swaminathan ran large-scale field trials across Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh — the regions best suited to the new varieties because of their existing canal irrigation. The results in the 1964-65 season were dramatic enough that the Indian government, under Agriculture Minister C. Subramaniam and with Swaminathan's scientific backing, took the politically bold decision to import 18,000 tonnes of Mexican semi-dwarf wheat seed in 1966 — the single largest seed import in history at that time.

The harvest of 1967-68 told the story.

India produced 17 million tonnes of wheat in that single season — a jump of more than 5 million tonnes over the previous year. By 1971, production had crossed 23 million tonnes. By the end of the 1970s, India had built buffer stocks large enough that it was exporting grain rather than begging for it. The food import dependency was broken. A country that had seemed on the edge of famine had fed itself.

This transformation — the most rapid agricultural turnaround of the 20th century — was what the world came to call the Green Revolution. Swaminathan was its Indian architect.

The lesson — and how to apply it: A breakthrough in the laboratory is worth nothing until it reaches the person who needs it. Swaminathan's gift was not just the science — it was his insistence on doing the entire chain of work: adapt, test, scale, train, convince. Try it: Whatever you are building or solving, ask at each stage: what would it take for the person with the least access to benefit from this? Do not stop at the elegant solution. Do the last-mile work.

The Harder Question: What the Revolution Left Behind

By the 1980s, Swaminathan was one of the most celebrated scientists in the world. He had been Director-General of IARI (1966–1972), Secretary to the Government of India in the Agriculture Ministry, and then Director-General of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines (1982–1988). He had received the Ramon Magsaysay Award, the Padma Bhushan, and the first ever World Food Prize. The world told him the story of the Green Revolution was a triumphant success.

He said: not quite.

Returning to India and looking at Punjab — the epicentre of the revolution — he saw what the productivity gains had cost. Farmers had shifted almost entirely to the new high-yielding varieties, abandoning hundreds of traditional varieties that had been adapted to local conditions over thousands of years. The monoculture had made crops more vulnerable to disease — if a pathogen evolved to attack a widely planted variety, it could wipe out entire regions at once. The heavy fertilizer use required by the new varieties was degrading soil quality over time. The high water requirements were depleting the water table in Punjab and Haryana at alarming rates — a problem whose severity would only become clear decades later, but which Swaminathan identified and warned about from the 1980s.

He coined a term for what he believed India needed instead: an Evergreen Revolution — one that sustained and even enhanced the natural resource base, rather than drawing it down. Productivity, yes, but productivity that could last 200 years, not 40.

This was a position of extraordinary intellectual courage. He had spent 30 years of his life building the Green Revolution. He had staked his reputation on it. Powerful interests — the agrochemical industry, large-farm lobbies, and colleagues who had built careers on the same framework — had every incentive to resist his critique.

He made it anyway, clearly and publicly.

The lesson — and how to apply it: Intellectual integrity means being willing to critique your own successes when the evidence demands it. The hardest criticism to make is of the thing you built. But the most destructive thing a leader can do is defend a flawed strategy simply because reversing it would require admitting a mistake. Try it: Look at the biggest thing you have built or decided in the last five years. What has it cost that you have not yet fully acknowledged? What would you do differently now? Name it, even just to yourself — naming it is the first step to fixing it.

MSSRF and the Last Mile: Knowledge for the Poorest Farmer

In 1988, Swaminathan returned to Chennai and founded the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF). He was 63 years old. Most people in public life at that age manage existing institutions or give speeches. He started something new.

MSSRF's focus was a deliberate corrective to what the Green Revolution had missed: not just productivity, but equity and sustainability. Who were the farmers not reached by the revolution? Smallholder farmers on rain-fed land. Women farmers, who do the majority of agricultural labour in India but own almost no land. Coastal fisherfolk, whose livelihoods depended on resources no government policy adequately protected. Tribal communities, whose traditional agricultural knowledge was being lost without documentation.

One of MSSRF's most innovative projects — begun in the late 1990s — was the Village Knowledge Centres (VKCs) in coastal Tamil Nadu. These were small ICT (information and communication technology) centres set up in fishing villages, giving communities access to weather forecasts, fish price information from markets in nearby towns, government scheme details, and health information — delivered in Tamil, in simple language, to people who had been operating in an information vacuum.

A fisherman who knew before he left port that prices at the Nagapattinam market were low could sail instead to Chennai. A farmer who knew there was a cyclone warning could move his crop. Information that the urban middle class took for granted was, for these communities, transformative — and MSSRF built the infrastructure to deliver it.

This work was ahead of its time. What MSSRF was doing in coastal Tamil Nadu fishing villages in 1999, the mobile internet and smartphone revolution later scaled to hundreds of millions of people across the world. The principle — that access to real-time, local information is a right, not a luxury, and that it must be delivered in the language and form the end-user can use — remains as radical and necessary as it was when Swaminathan first insisted on it.

The lesson — and how to apply it: Technology that reaches only the already-privileged is not progress — it is widening inequality with a modern label. Swaminathan asked, at every stage of his career, who is not yet benefiting from this? and then worked backward from that person. Try it: Think of a skill, tool, or resource you have. Who in your family, your community, your workplace does not have access to it? Can you share it? Teach it? Translate it? Even one person's access changes their life.

The Policy Years: Giving Farmers a Voice in Law

In 2004, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh appointed Swaminathan to chair the National Commission on Farmers — the first such body in India's history. The commission's mandate was to study the situation of India's farming communities and recommend a comprehensive policy framework.

What the commission found was not surprising to anyone who had been paying attention, but it was damning: farmers were trapped in debt, squeezed by input costs that were rising faster than output prices, unable to sell their produce at fair prices because the market was structurally rigged against them, and increasingly prone to take their own lives in despair. Between 1995 and 2005, more than a hundred thousand Indian farmers had died by suicide.

The commission's 2006 report — still referred to as the Swaminathan Commission Report — made 360 recommendations, among them:

  • Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops must be set at 50% above the comprehensive cost of production, not merely at the cost of seeds and labour (the existing calculation excluded family labour and land rent).
  • Farmers must have legal access to land — tenancy reforms so that the people who work land actually have rights over it.
  • Debt relief and access to institutional credit at low interest rates, to break the cycle of moneylender dependency.
  • Women farmers must be formally recognised as farmers — eligible for credit, crop insurance, and government schemes in their own name.
  • Agriculture must be recognised as a national priority in budgetary allocation.

Not all of these recommendations were implemented. Several were resisted by powerful interests. The Swaminathan Commission's MSP recommendation remains, as of the 2020s, a central demand of India's farmers' movements — a demand that the government had not fully acted on even a decade and a half after the report.

Swaminathan was appointed to the Rajya Sabha as a nominated member in 2007 and served until 2013. He used the platform to speak on behalf of farmers, food security, seed sovereignty, and climate-resilient agriculture — often in pointed disagreement with official policy.

He was not bitter about the gap between recommendation and implementation. He was persistent. "Policy changes slowly," he said in numerous interviews, "but it changes. The important thing is to keep putting the right ideas into the system."

The lesson — and how to apply it: Long-term change rarely follows the schedule of the person who proposes it. Swaminathan filed his commission report in 2006 and did not live to see all of it implemented. He kept working anyway, understanding that policy advocacy is cumulative — every report, every speech, every piece of evidence entered into the record moves the dial slightly, and the next person picks up from where you left off. Try it: If you are working on something important that hasn't produced results yet, ask: have I documented my work clearly enough that someone else could continue it if I stopped? Creating that continuity is not defeat — it is the most effective thing you can do for the long run.

The Final Years and the Question He Never Stopped Asking

In his eighties and into his nineties, Swaminathan continued working at MSSRF, writing, speaking, and thinking — particularly about two issues he considered urgent: climate change and agriculture, and digital agriculture equity.

He watched with alarm as the data accumulated on what a warming climate would do to South Asian agriculture: shifting monsoon patterns, increased drought frequency, rising sea levels threatening coastal delta farmland (including the very Cauvery delta where he had grown up), and heat stress that reduced wheat and rice yields at precisely the temperatures India and Pakistan were already touching in summer. He called for a new climate-resilient seed bank — a repository of traditional varieties that had evolved in Indian conditions over millennia and that might be more resilient to a warmer, more erratic climate than the high-yield varieties he himself had helped introduce.

He was still arguing for this at 95.

He also lived to see the smartphone revolution reach India's farms. He was delighted and characteristically pragmatic about it — what mattered was not the technology itself but whether it reached the farmer who needed it, and whether the farmer could act on what it told him. The question was the same one he had been asking since 1943, just in a new form.

Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan died on 28 September 2023 in Chennai, aged 98. His three daughters — all distinguished in their own right, including the politician and social activist Madura Swaminathan — were with him. The government of India ordered a state funeral. Tributes came from every major agricultural institution in the world.

The eulogies, though, largely missed the lesson his life most forcefully taught. They celebrated the Green Revolution. They should have celebrated equally the fact that he then spent sixty more years questioning it, improving it, and insisting that the work was not done.

Why M.S. Swaminathan Matters to You — Right Now

India feeds 1.4 billion people. That fact — taken for granted today — was not guaranteed in 1960. It is, in significant part, the result of the work of one scientist who asked a question in 1943 and spent 80 years trying to answer it.

But the deeper lesson of his life is not the Green Revolution itself. It is what he did after it succeeded. He did not rest on the achievement. He did not defend it from criticism. He publicly identified what it had gotten wrong, started new institutions to fix it, advocated for the farmers the revolution had not fully reached, and kept refining his answer until the day he died.

That is the model: pursue a problem with rigour, share the results honestly, and have the humility to keep revising your own answers when the evidence demands it. The problem you are working on does not have to be feeding a billion people. It can be improving your team, changing a system in your institution, helping your community. The method is the same.

What M.S. Swaminathan's Life Teaches — And How to Use It

  • Let a real injustice set your compass. Swaminathan's entire career was a response to the Bengal Famine. He did not choose agriculture for status — he chose it because a catastrophe had made a question unavoidable. When you find the injustice or gap that you cannot look away from, follow it. That is more reliable guidance than any career plan. Use it: Identify one specific, concrete problem in your field or community that bothers you more than it should. That persistent discomfort is information.
  • Do the entire chain. Laboratory to land: the science is worth nothing until it reaches the last farmer. Swaminathan understood that his job was not done when a new wheat variety worked in a trial plot — it was done when smallholder farmers across Punjab were growing it and feeding their families. Whatever you are building, ask constantly: who is not yet reached by this, and what does it take to reach them?
  • Critique your own successes. The hardest thing Swaminathan ever did was stand up and say that the revolution he built was causing ecological harm and leaving poor farmers behind. He did it anyway. The ability to criticise your own work — before someone else has to — is the mark of a trustworthy leader and a serious scientist. Use it: Make a habit of once-yearly reviewing your biggest project or decision and asking: what has this cost? What would I do differently?
  • Information is equity. His Village Knowledge Centres were based on the insight that the poorest person's life improves dramatically when they have access to the same information the wealthy take for granted. You have knowledge, skills, or access to information that others do not. Share it. Teach it. Translate it. Use it: Identify one person in your family or workplace who lacks access to information or skills you have. Give them two hours this month.
  • Policy is the longest game — play it anyway. His commission report in 2006 has still not been fully implemented. He kept advocating. The cumulative weight of correct, well-evidenced argument eventually moves institutions — not on your schedule, but it moves them. Do not give up on changing a system simply because the change is slow. Document your work, file your evidence, and trust that the next person will pick up from where you stopped.
  • Age is not a stop sign. He founded MSSRF at 63, was appointed to Parliament at 82, and was publishing research papers at 95. The work was the point, not the stage of life. Wherever you are in your career, the question is not "is it too late?" — it is "what does the work require of me right now?"
